Operating within the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is the federal agency specifically dedicated to generating new knowledge in the field of occupational safety and health and to transferring that knowledge into practice for the betterment of workers.   The mission of the National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL) is to prevent work-related injury, illness, and death by advancing the state of knowledge and application of personal protective technologies (PPT).  In support of this mission, NPPTL is federally mandated in Title 42, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 84 (42 CFR 84) to test and certify respiratory protective devices. 

Respirators are tested and evaluated using machines and human test subjects.  Respirator testing is performed during the certification process where a new or modified respirator is submitted by the manufacturer for approval.  Testing may also be conducted as a post-certification activity, to assess the continued compliance of a respirator or to investigate reports of improper respirator performance in the field. 

As part of the certification process, NIOSH receives respiratory protection equipment which must be logged, secured, transported for testing, or returned to storage, and destroyed or returned to applicants for final disposition.  This equipment is utilized to perform testing required for certification. 

The respirators evaluated by NIOSH are used every day by workers in a myriad of industries, from the health-care worker who wears a “dust mask” (filtering-facepiece respirator) to the firefighter who wears a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).

Scope of Work

NPPTL is requesting a Contractor (Technician II) to provide full-time support to for logging, transporting, and tracking all equipment received as well as all equipment to be shipped out of the NIOSH facility.  Transportation includes moving hardware between buildings within the NIOSH facility.  The technician will also support certification testing as needed.

Some work assignments may be in environments (buildings, labs, outside locations, etc.) where mechanical equipment, etc. is being tested, analyzed/monitored, operated, and/or maintained. Equipment may be loud and noisy or have exposed moving components. Such work may involve routine lifting up to 50 pounds, regular handling, grasping, kneeling and carrying, and constant use of vision and mental alertness.

The Contractor shall provide the following logistical/scientific services:

  1. Receiving, logging in, tracking and securing all hardware delivered for certification testing.
  2. Moving hardware or equipment between various labs or storage locations.
  3. Shipping respirator hardware to the manufacturer following testing.
  4. Packing and shipping laboratory equipment for calibration.
  5. Setting up and conducting respirator certification testing as required.
  6. Supporting and maintaining a safe work environment.


  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in science or safety and health plus at least 2 years of job-related experience.
  • Experience working in a laboratory and/or conducting scientific research preferred.
  • A working knowledge of respirators and other personal protective equipment is preferred. 
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Knowledge of computer software such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Demonstrated exceptional planning and organizing skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with people at all levels of an organization.


  • No travel is anticipated.
