Job Description

Our Client is looking for a Substation Designer to support its growing T&D business.  Work involves all aspects of physical design for high voltage utility substations, 34.5kV through 500kV. 

Responsibilities include the following:

  • Preparation of new substation general arrangement drawings or revisions to existing drawings.  Includes preparation of physical drawings within the substation boundary, including plan and elevation drawings, conduit, cable trench, grounding and lighting plans using CADD software tools.
  • Selection of hardware for high voltage cable, bus and equipment connections
  • Preparation of Bills of Material for all material and equipment within the substation
  • Prepare concept sketches in support of proposals for new work.
  • Coordinate design activities with Structural/Civil engineers.
  • Mentor and supervise drafters and other less experienced staff. 
  • Field walk-downs of existing substation facilities in support of modification projects
  • Experience working in a team environment.  Must have strong interpersonal skills working with other members of the project team
  • Document control in accordance with AECOM and Client requirements and processes

Level specific responsibilities:

  • Works under limited supervision performing complex technical work. 
  • Duties may include technical responsibility for a major phase or component of a project. 
  • Takes lead role in work-flow coordination.
  • This position does not include sponsorship for United States Work Authorization.

Minimum Qualifications

  • HS diploma or GED plus 6 years of relevant experience in design of HV Utility substations including preparation of plan and profile drawings; conduit, cable trench, grounding and lighting plans, or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education (AA/AS degree plus 4 years of relevant experience).
  • Must be proficient using AutoCADD or Microstation 2D CADD Software in preparation of these physical drawings and have experience working with Rastor files
  • Must be familiar with substation arrangements and equipment outlines, including associated supporting structures and electrical connections, for high voltage equipment used in substations, including rigid bus, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, lightning arresters, instrument transformers, and communications equipment
  • Must be familiar with NESC clearance requirements

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using 3D CADD for HV substation design
  • Field walk-downs of existing utility substations
  • Associates Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or CADD
